Race Week Begins at the Dock Your Ferry Leaves From

Posted on: October 22, 2026

At 8:15 on a race morning in early November, a small window opens behind Opal Key Resort, on the marina side. It's the Fury Hut, where Race World Offshore checks credentials for its VIP water shuttle. Half an hour later the shuttle begins carrying wristbanded guests out to the Outer Mole. The Sunset Key ferry uses the same marina. Opal lists its boat leaving Opal Key at a quarter past and a quarter to every hour, from 6:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., for a crossing of about seven minutes.

Most Key West festivals happen on Old Town's streets, and the island only meets them when someone takes the ferry across. The Key West World Championships, running November 1 through 8, 2026, are different. They take place on the harbor and start from the marina at the island's front door. That makes race week a matter of scheduling more than spectating. The useful calendar for a Sunset Key household is the one that shows when the water is busy.

The harbor is the racecourse

The Coast Guard's standing rule for this event covers the Atlantic off the tip of Key West, plus the Key West Main Ship Channel, the Key West Turning Basin and the Key West Harbor Entrance. That is the deep water ships use to reach Old Town, and it is where race boats run at full throttle.

The harbor's calm water is part of what makes the venue famous. In its coverage of an earlier championship, Keys News put it this way:

"A portion of the challenging 4.4-mile-per-lap course runs through Key West Harbor, meaning smooth water where racers can achieve breathtaking speeds and fans can watch from vantage points that are extraordinarily close to the action."

The layout changes from year to year. The organizer's 2025 drivers packet described a counterclockwise course of about 5.0 miles, with the start line roughly a mile from the finish. The best spectator seats tell you where the action is. Race World Offshore says its XINSURANCE VIP area on the Outer Mole faces north and west toward Key West Harbor. Anyone who has watched a sunset from the island already knows that stretch of water well.

Two boat services, one marina

Race days are Wednesday, Friday and Sunday: November 4, 6 and 8. On each of those mornings, the VIP Fury Ferry Shuttle runs from the Opal Hotel Garage to the VIP tent on the Mole. It leaves every 30 minutes and carries up to 85 guests per trip. Gates open at 9:00 a.m., and the shuttle starts at 8:45 a.m. from behind Opal Resort. Organizers require wristbands and credentials every day for shuttles and VIP areas. On the Mole itself, golf carts, mopeds and guest vehicles are not allowed, with ADA exceptions.

Nothing published for 2026 says how the Sunset Key ferry will run on race days. The posted timetable is the one Opal shows year-round. Anyone with a lunch reservation, a contractor coming over, or guests arriving on race morning should call the concierge the week before. With an 85-seat shuttle leaving every half hour from the same marina, the dock area will be crowded around 9:00 a.m., whatever the ferry schedule turns out to be.

The hour the harbor belongs to everyone

In the middle of the organizer's race-day schedule, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the harbor is listed as "Harbor Open for Public Traffic." The same window appears on all three race days. Here is how Wednesday, November 4 is scheduled, subject to change:

  1. 10:00 a.m. Race 1, Bracket Classes 6 and 7.
  2. 10:30 a.m. Race 2, Mod V, then Bracket Classes 2 and 3 with Vee Limited.
  3. 11:00 a.m. Race 3, Bracket Class 4, then Bracket Class 5 with Cat 300.
  4. 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Helicopter refueling, and the harbor opens to public traffic.
  5. 12:30 p.m. Race 4, Class 2.
  6. 1:15 p.m. Race 5, Super Cat.
  7. 2:15 p.m. Race 6, Class 1, then Super Vee.
  8. 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. Race 7, Super Stock, followed by podium awards on the Outer Mole.

The headline classes race in the afternoon. Super Cat, Class 1 and Super Stock all run after the midday break. A resident who wants the fastest boats can spend the morning on the island and cross over after lunch. A resident who would rather avoid the busiest hours on the water has a clear midday window to work with.

Private boat owners face the Coast Guard's own limits. During the event, only designated participants and official patrol vessels may enter the regulated area. Spectators may be inside it only within a designated spectator area. A boat that needs to cross can ask the Coast Guard Patrol Commander for permission on VHF Channel 16 and, if allowed, must pass straight through at a safe speed without stopping. The federal regulation says the exact dates and hours are published each year in the Local Notice to Mariners and broadcast over VHF. For comparison, the Coast Guard's 2024 enforcement notice applied from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each race day that year. The 2026 hours will appear in this year's notice. This is general information, not legal advice. Boat owners should confirm the current rules directly with Coast Guard Sector Key West before heading out.

Race week at a glance

The three race days follow the harbor's clock, and most of the evening events are on Old Town streets.

Date What's happening Where
Sunday, Nov 1 Boat parade, lines up 3:30 p.m., starts 4:00 p.m. Duval Street
Wednesday, Nov 4 Race day, billed as the "Bonus Day" Harbor, Truman Waterfront Park, Outer Mole
Thursday, Nov 5 Greene Street Party, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Greene Street
Friday, Nov 6 Race day, then the Duval Street Block Party Harbor, then Duval Street
Sunday, Nov 8 Final race day and RWO Awards Ceremony Harbor, then Coffee Butler Amphitheater

Some details are still settling. The Greene Street and Duval Street parties are on KeyWestTourist's event listings, but Race World Offshore's detailed schedule doesn't list them. The organizer's own page shows the Welcome Party and Saturday Night Party with locations still "TBD." The Sunday awards are free. The detailed schedule lists them from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., while the organizer's event-details page says 5 p.m. Plan on the earlier time and check again that week.

Choosing a crossing

Each of the three race days offers something a little different.

Wednesday is the low-key day. In the XINSURANCE VIP area, organizers offer a cash bar, food vendors and shaded seating. The full breakfast and catered lunch are saved for Friday and Sunday.

Friday has the most going on. VIP guests on the Mole get breakfast and a coffee bar from 9 to 11 a.m., then a lunch buffet from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. by Catered Affairs, the owners of Virgilio's and La Trattoria. Ocean Key Resort is also selling a limited number of tickets for race viewing at Sunset Pier that day. Ocean Key also lists a Sunday date for Sunset Pier as November 9, but the race schedule puts Sunday racing on November 8, so confirm the date before buying a ticket.

Sunday brings the championship to a close. The awards move from the Mole to the amphitheater in Truman Waterfront Park, so it's the one evening the race week draws people back toward the water after dark.

Guests who don't want to walk the Mole have other spots. The Race Village at Truman Waterfront Park is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on race days, and the Mount Sinai vendor village on the Outer Mole runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Rideshare drop-off is at the Key West Amphitheater, about a half-mile walk from the VIP tent. Cyclists must wear helmets and lock their bikes at the midgate. That same Keys News article also named harborfront hotel restaurants and bars and Mallory Square as popular places to watch. It reported that on non-race days, fans could see the boats, watch testing runs and talk with crews at the race village. That makes Thursday and Saturday easier days to see the boats up close.

When the last heat is done and the shuttle stops running, the marina behind Opal Key goes back to its usual timetable, with the island ferry leaving at a quarter past and a quarter to each hour.

If race week has you thinking about the island's place on Key West Harbor, whether that's dock access, sunset views over the water, or how the ferry fits a household's routine, Bob Cardenas and the Cardenas & Carlson team would be glad to talk it through. Explore Properties on Sunset Key.
