The second Labor Day since Jimmy Buffett's passing has settled into a shape, and for anyone who lives on Sunset Key, that shape matters more than the lineup. The 2026 Just a Few Friends Festival will take place September 3–7, 2026, featuring expanded programming, more live music, themed events, and continued support for local charitable partners. Five days sounds like a long stretch to plan around, but the weekend is really two festivals stacked on top of each other, and the ferry from Slip 29 makes the difference between them plain.

The first is loud, ticketed, and squarely across the harbor. The second is quieter, mostly free, and folded into a Sunday memorial that surprises people who came for the concerts. Knowing which one you are crossing for is the whole trick.

Two festivals hiding inside one long weekend

The Friday and Saturday half of Just a Few Friends is the one the flyers advertise. Friday night, September 4, transforms Duval Street into a full-blown throwback, recreating the legendary 1998 Parrothead Street Party. The ticketed experiences cluster here too, from margarita crawls to cheeseburger competitions, and the crowds move in the classic Duval circuit between the seaport and the southernmost blocks.

The Sunday and Monday half is the memorial arc. It is anchored by a parade that ends at Truman Waterfront Park and a free concert that runs into the evening. This is the half that quietly draws the locals, and it is the half that rewards a resident who can time the ferry with intention instead of endurance.

Nights that reward the crossing

If you are going to spend the ferry ride, spend it on nights where the venue does something you cannot replicate at home. A few anchors from the 2026 schedule are worth targeting:

• Friday, September 4 — the Duval Street Party. The recreation of the 1998 Parrothead street party is a one-night-only crowd, and the density is the point.
• Chart Room sessions. Ticketed experiences include harbor cruises with live music, Milagro Margarita Bar Strolls, a "Hamburgers with Cheese in a Tropical Place" beach party and intimate Chart Room performances. Certain shows, like Will Kimbrough's intimate Chart Room performance, are already selling out fast. The room is small enough that the "intimate" label is honest, which is not something you can say of most Key West venues in September.
• The Milagro Margarita Bar Stroll. The Milagro Margarita Bar Strolls at $48 turn Duval Street and the Historic Seaport into a tropical pub crawl, and Saturday's Milagro Margarita Bar Stroll is a lively tasting tour where 22 bars compete for the title of Key West's Best Margarita.
• Ocean Key Sunset Pier concerts. The pier performances put you over the water at exactly the hour Sunset Key residents usually watch the light from their own verandas, which is either a reason to cross or a reason to stay. Decide before you book.
• Cheeseburger on the Beach. The Cheeseburger Beach Battle on Thursday lets travelers taste-test their way to paradise (only $15-$35 to vote for the best burger in the Keys).

The prices are worth noting for planning, not for their own sake. The Parrots & Margaritas 5K Run/Walk on Saturday morning is the rare workout that ends with a cocktail — for just $46.99. Think sunset sails ($111), snorkeling combos ($79.95), tiki cruises ($110), and the breathtaking Bubbles Brunch Sail at $150. If you are stacking two ticketed events in a day, the ferry becomes the constraint. Latitudes will not seat beachwear, and the crossing home is not an on-demand shuttle.

The Sunday everyone underestimates

Sunday is the day that separates residents from visitors. Paul Menta and the Daily Plan-it team organize the Jimmy Buffett tribute, which transforms Duval Street, Truman Waterfront and the Chart Room into festival venues. Free highlights include a Friday Duval Street Party, Second Line Memorial Parade and Party in the Park concerts. The Second Line procession is the emotional center of the weekend, and it ends where the light does, at Truman Waterfront Park.

The park concert that follows is not a warm-up act. There, the free "Party in the Park" concert will carry the tribute past sunset with Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band, vocalist Nadirah Shakoor from Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, and a stage full of his musical friends. A Coral Reefer vocalist on a free stage a ten-minute walk from the ferry dock is the kind of thing you do not see advertised in the ticketed blocks, and it is the single strongest argument for crossing Sunday evening rather than Friday night.

That framing is not marketing. The badge program that funds the weekend puts its money into three specific institutions. Proceeds from collectible Event Badges directly benefit three Key West organizations: Reef Relief, the Bahama Village Music Program, and the Key West High School Marching Band. In 2025, badge holders helped generate $45,447 for local charitable causes.

The Latitudes problem

There is a small logistical friction that catches people every year. Latitudes is located on the private island of Sunset Key. Our boat launch is located at Slip 29, behind the Opal Key Resort, 245 Front St. Your reservation time is your departure time, please arrive 8-10 minutes prior to check in. The dock is the same waterfront district as most of the festival venues, which sounds convenient and often isn't.

The reason is the dress code. Dress Code is upscale resort attire: collared shirt, shorts or slacks for men -no tank tops; casual dress, shorts or slacks for women. No beachwear please. Friday's Duval Street Party and the Cheeseburger contest are not events you attend in slacks. If you want a Latitudes dinner in the same day as a festival event, plan a return crossing to change, or slot the reservation on Thursday before things get loud, or on Monday as everything softens.

What a Sunset Key evening does that Duval cannot

There will be nights across this weekend when the correct move is to stay put. Saturday, in particular, tends to fill Old Town past the point of pleasure, and the same crossing that felt like a novelty on Friday becomes a queue on Saturday.

The compensations are on your side of the water. Latitudes runs a full dinner service from 4:30 to 9 p.m. through the weekend, with Gulf sunset views that are the actual thing everyone across the harbor is trying to approximate. At Sunset Key Cottages, there are plenty of ways to savor the flavors of island life. In the morning, enjoy a complimentary breakfast basket delivered to your door. Every afternoon, listen for the bell of "Sweets Served Daily," an island ritual where treats for children and adults are served by the ice cream man. At sunset, kick back with a tropical cocktail at Flipper's Pool Bar. And for dinner, tuck into gracious, award-winning fine dining at Latitudes.

The trick is to treat Saturday as the reset day and let the festival come to you through the water and the wind. The music on Sunset Pier carries, faintly, on the right breeze. That is not a substitute for being there. It is the reason you chose to live seven minutes and a full atmosphere away.

The badge question, briefly

A badge is not a ticket. The badge is not a ticket to individual events; those experiences are purchased separately. Badge holders do receive special access to the Party in the Park viewing area, along with invitations to badge-holder gatherings, advance announcements for ticket opportunities before general release, and a QR code linking to exclusive offers from participating Key West businesses. For a resident who is crossing selectively, the Party in the Park access alone is worth the badge on Sunday evening. The rest is philanthropy dressed as a lanyard.

There is a companion story a few blocks away that will shape future Labor Days. The Historic Seaport building that housed Jimmy Buffett's recording studio, Shrimp Boat Sound, is not being demolished. Per Keys Weekly reporting in February 2026, the city board approved a proposal to keep it as a recording studio and add a museum, private recording sessions, and an outdoor margarita bar. Next year's festival will almost certainly route through it. This year's is the last one before that changes.

A weekend, weighed

Sunset Key's advantage across a Labor Day like this one is not distance. It is choice. The seven-minute crossing means you can attend the Second Line, hear a Coral Reefer voice at Truman Waterfront, walk back to Slip 29, and be on your own veranda before the last set finishes across the harbor. Very few Key West addresses can pull the whole weekend together and still keep Saturday quiet.
