Where does someone on Sunset Key stand to watch a parade made of boats? The obvious guess is the water's edge at home, with the island's sunset side facing the harbor. The published route says otherwise. This year's Schooner Wharf Bar/Absolut Vodka Lighted Boat Parade sets out on Saturday, December 12, 2026. According to Schooner Wharf, the procession "starts from the Key West Bight at the Historic Seaport and by Schooner Wharf Bar where the judges' stand with local dignitaries will be located," and then "continues along the harbor." The route description doesn't mention Mallory Square, the Opal Key pier, or the channel off the island.
That leaves an island household two ways into the evening. One is a seat on the launch and a walk to William Street. The other is a hull with lights strung in the rigging and a place in the procession. The second way has its first deadline eight weeks from now.
A parade that takes kayaks
People tend to picture schooners and private yachts, and those are in the field. The organizer's own entry notice goes further: "Vessels of all sizes - kayaks, dinghies, fishing vessels, sailing ships, private yachts and charter boats - are welcome." Last December's results show how wide that field really is. Keys Weekly reported that the 2025 parade "shined with dozens of entries, from tiny kayaks to majestic schooners." The top five places went to:
- 1st: S/V schooner America
- 2nd: M/V Izzy Rose
- 3rd: M/V Cruisin' Tikis
- 4th: M/V USCG Response Boat
- 5th: S/V Danger
The fourth-place boat carried Santa Claus on top, and Izzy Rose took second dressed in holiday characters, with a Key West chicken lighting the way. A Coast Guard response boat finishing in the money, and a chicken on a bow taking second, show the judging rewards imagination over displacement. A modest boat dressed with wit has a real chance of placing.
The Coast Guard boat also has a set place at the front. Schooner Wharf owner and event organizer Evalena Worthington put it this way ahead of the 2025 parade:
"We are once again honored to have the U.S. Coast Guard Group Key West lead the parade, as has been the proud tradition for the past 28 years and is always a crowd favorite."
The prize table already has an Opal Key line
The 2026 notice lists prizes for 12 winning places, plus a free raffle with donations from the Mel Fisher Family, Water Sport Adventures, dining gift certificates, Schooner Wharf bar tabs, and Opal Key Resort & Marina. In 2025, event publicity put the total at $40,000 in prizes. Schooner Wharf hasn't published a 2026 total, so treat the 2025 figure as a reference point only.
The Opal Key name links the island to the night in a second way. Opal Key Resort & Marina, the Front Street resort whose dock serves the Sunset Key launch, runs a 37-slip marina. It takes motor yachts from 25 to 200 feet for daily or overnight dockage. For a visiting yacht owner, or a guest who wants their boat on the Old Town waterfront that weekend, that marina is the obvious base. From there the parade is a short run up the harbor.
The entrant's calendar runs out before the parade does
The parade is set for December 12, but the first date that matters for a captain falls more than a week earlier. Schooner Wharf's 2026 notice sets out this sequence:
- Wednesday, November 25: The Harbor Walk of Lights is switched on at the Historic Seaport. Holiday music starts at 5 p.m., and the main tree lighting is at 6 p.m.
- Friday, December 4: The last day to enter with the entry fee waived.
- Sunday, December 6: The Schooner Wharf Tree Trimming Party and Toy Drive starts at 6 p.m. on the Harbor Walk of Lights at William Street.
- Thursday, December 10: The captains' meeting is at 8 p.m. in Schooner Wharf's Sail Loft, with complimentary beverages and hors d'oeuvres.
- Saturday, December 12: Music begins at 6 p.m., and the parade starts at 8 p.m.
- Monday, December 14: The awards ceremony.
As of October 10, Schooner Wharf's page still says "2026 Registration Form Coming Soon," and it doesn't say what the fee is after December 4. Last year was more flexible than the deadline suggests. In 2025, captains were asked to register by December 11, but entries were accepted as late as parade day, and forms were available at the bar or on its website. Nobody has said whether 2026 will work the same way. The December 4 date is the one in writing.
The tree trimming on December 6 works as a scouting trip. Prizes go to the best handmade ornaments in three categories: Most Original, Most Nautical, and Most Popular with the holiday crowd. Every tree trimmer gets a free holiday cocktail, and the choices are egg nog, hot apple jack, or Swedish Glogg. Guests can also bring an unwrapped gift for the toy drive by Angels Just 4 Kids, and each donor gets a free holiday drink from Schooner Wharf. It's a good evening to see the waterfront in its holiday lights before planning your own.
When the crossing is the plan
For a household watching from shore, the launch timetable shapes the night more than the parade does. The current Sunset Key Cottages FAQ from Opal Collection says the crossing to the Opal Key dock near Mallory Square takes about seven minutes. Boats leave Sunset Key on the hour and half-hour. Return boats leave Opal Key at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour, from 6:45 a.m. to 10:45 p.m. After 11 p.m., the boat runs by request. Laid against the parade schedule, the evening looks like this:
| Time | At the Historic Seaport | On the Sunset Key launch |
|---|---|---|
| 5:30 p.m. | Decorated boats still at the dock | Departs Sunset Key |
| 6:00 p.m. | Holiday music begins | Departs Sunset Key |
| 8:00 p.m. | Parade begins past the Schooner Wharf judges' stand | Departs Sunset Key |
| 10:45 p.m. | Last scheduled departure from Opal Key | |
| After 11:00 p.m. | Service by request |
The official viewing area runs all along the Harbor Walk of Lights at the Historic Seaport, with the reviewing stand at Schooner Wharf Bar and Galley. The calendar suggests coming early for live holiday music, dinner and drinks, and a look at the decorated boats while they're still at the dock. In 2025, the 6 p.m. music was the Bahama Village Music Program House of Pan Steel Band playing holiday favorites on steel drums. Visitors walked the Harbor Walk while captains and crews put their last decorations in place. Neither the organizer nor Opal Collection publishes a walking time from the Opal Key dock to William Street, so leave a margin when you time your crossing.
The Harbor Walk itself covers about three blocks around the Key West Bight Marina and Historic Seaport. It runs along the seawall past Greene, William and Margaret Streets toward the Key West Ferry Terminal, and it's lit every night from Thanksgiving eve through New Year's Eve. That gives anyone who can't make December 12 about five weeks of other evenings to see the lights.
Saturday, with a Sunday behind it
Last year showed the published date isn't guaranteed. The 34th annual parade was scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025. It was moved to Sunday, December 14, because of possible bad weather, including lightning, and updates went out on Schooner Wharf's Facebook page. Nothing published for 2026 names a rain date. Still, a household that books Saturday dinner on the Bight can keep Sunday, December 13, loosely open.
The December 14, 2025 date had a second event on it. That afternoon, the Rotary Club of Key West turned the Perry Hotel & Marina into a Christmas carnival, followed by the Stock Island Lighted Boat Parade, which cruised past the marina. Proceeds went to the club's scholarship fund for local students. A 2026 date for the Stock Island parade hasn't been published.
If your plans for December 12 involve a decorated tender, a kayak with lights, or guests docking at Opal Key for parade weekend, the team at Bob Cardenas is glad to help with the details of a Sunset Key Christmas on the water. That can be as simple as timing the launch home or knowing which dock is closest to the Schooner Wharf judges' stand.
